Creamy white bean soup with meatballs and dried plums

Hello my beloved food addicts!

I have to admit that it has been some time since I posted some recipe here but I swear that I am back and I will share my recipes with you as I did before. I guess that all of you already know that soups are my favourite dish so I decided to show you my own new recipe of a bean soup.

As I cook soup every week I always try to make them versatile. I try to avoid repetition and  copying others recipes and that’s exactly what I did with this bean soup. Experimenting with these delicately buttery flavoured beans in a combination with slightly sweet dried plums softened by milky cream are totally in balance with juicy meatballs. Some people can be sceptical about dried plums in this soup but they are exactly what makes it special. I recommend you not to avoid them and definitely try them and I am pretty sure you will love the result. In a past,  dried plums were used as a substitution for a meat when people could not afford to eat meat as often as we do nowadays and in many different cuisines they are still used for savoury dishes too.

  • 1 cup of white beans, soaked in a water for at least 4 hours
  • 1/2 onion
  • olive oil
  • 1 cup of cream
  • 7 cups of chicken or any meat stock
  • 7-8 dried plums
  • 1 cup of water
  • salt and pepper
  • 4-5 juniper berries
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 Tbs of lemon juice
  • 1Tbs fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 larger potato, peeled and diced (optional- just if you want the soup more thick)


  • 200g minced meat (pork, lamb or veal)
  • 2Tbs of fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 Tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup of cooked rice
  • 1 egg
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 smaller clove of minced garlic
  • 1/2 smaller onion, chopped finely


  • In a large saucepan, heat the oil. Cook onion until tender stirring continually. Stir in beans, chicken broth, juniper berries, bay leaves and water. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and then simmer until beans are almost soft and cooked.
  • Meanwhile in a larger bowl mix together all the ingredients for the meatballs. Form small meatballs with your hands (one meatball in a size of two bites).
  • When the beans are almost cooked add meatballs, dried plums and cream to the soup. If you want soup more thick add also diced potato.Bring to a boil again, occasionally stirring and cook till the meatballs are done for about 35 mins. if it’s needed add more salt and pepper.
  • Stir in lemon juice and fresh parsley, remove from heat and serve with a slice of bread.
